A Little Bird Told Me...

Don't you just marvel at birds? They are amazing and wonderfully made. They fly for heaven sakes! Yes, they can be extremely messy and eat pounds and pounds of black oil sunflower seeds but they are intriguing!

Did you know that Cardinals mate for life? I always watch these red birds to see if I find the mate...and if I don't see the mate, I wonder what happened. I wonder what in their genetic make-up and tiny little brain creates this bond. I'd like to think it is that they have figurative "heart" and that it was just meant to be this way as a lesson to those who will take notice.

Regardless, there are some beautiful song birds in our backyards, our neighborhoods, even in the cityscape. The colors of an Indigo Bunting. The coolness of a large Blue Jay. The sweet appearance of a Titmouse or Chickadee. The looming power of a Perigrine Falcon. The sleek darkness of an American Crow or the amazing call of the Red Winged Black Bird. Okay, yes...I do love birdwatching and I carry that love into my crafting!

Let's see what a catbird looks like in real life:

So, when I started searching for felt, I knew it HAD to be a similar color (durh) - but did not realize how many grays there were in the felt world until I embarked on this journey!

I landed on a cool gray with a heathered appearance.  The felt is very substantial with a nice hand.  I then searched for several images of the Catbird to see how broad it's chest is - the "attitude" if you will, of this bird.

So, this is what I came up with and I do love the black thread on the cool gray felt.  I love how wide the chest appears and the stern look.  Wish I could incorporate the song of this bird from the region I live!  As I walk through wooded areas, this bird blends it's call regionally with the call of a Brown Thrasher and creates the most catty "mew" I have ever heard.  I hope you will go out to investigate the local birds in your area and if you cannot, do investigate how to pay homage by depicting your favorite birds in your favorite medium...be it felt, watercolor, clay, or in prose.

Frankie Doodle Strikes Again!

This Blog is being brought to you by a creative soul who battles the daily grind of life - the type of grind that can seriously interfere with expressing artistic ideas. It happens.  We get busy, we get stressed, we get over it, we get inspired, we get CREATIVE.  So, let's embark upon a journey where we intentionally seek ways to apply creativity to our everyday.  Even if you think you are not creative - I bet you have ideas that could spark creativity!  Join the journey and I am glad you are here!

Well, it took some time to break out of a funk and get into some serious creativity...but man does it feel GREAT to be back!  The funny thing is that it only took a few months of walking and looking at nature to find that longing again.  I am enjoying sewing small crafts and find inspiration in everyday things.  Acorns, pumpkins, leaves, clouds...all the things we can see when outdoors -especially this time of year!  Autumn...ahhhhh yes!  I love your colors, your brisk feel, the harkening of holidays I so enjoy.  It is a truly special time of year in most every aspect.

So I am making these adorable felt items and would love for you to take a look at the items I have available.  Today, I am featuring a Gnome that absolutely made my day today. He is 2.75 inches tall and has movable arms that you can bend (gently) to pose and even has a tiny wire staff.

I found that they look especially cute in small terrarium jars...yes!  You can put some moss, a small acorn, even bark or a small branch to create the setting inside a lidded candy jar or other glass container.  Experiment...BE CREATIVE!  This little Gnome is equally at home perched around bookcases, plants (keep him dry though!), and framed art or photos.  He looks right at home with this felt mushroom too!

I have used straight pins to temporarily fix both the Gnome and the Mushroom on a fleece blanket for this photograph.  You can experiment with straight pins and a small clump of moss.  Or, if you do not have access to these items please post a reply and I will be happy to add to the available items and even offer them assembled!
